Allergies are the body's overreaction to what it considers a threat to your well being. For those with airborne allergies, these are often perfectly harmless particles in the air. The symptoms can often be similar to other illnesses. Here is a closer look at the when, where and why of this condition.

When Symptoms Occur----This can be a real eye opener about the condition from which you suffer. Be aware of when your symptoms are triggered. Is it only during a certain time of the year? Or do they happen continuously. A certain time of year would indicate that you are probably sensitive to pollen or other outdoor allergen that is more prevalent during a particular time of year.

Continued problems often indicate sensitivity to substances that are found indoors and are around all through the year. They include things that are found in the cleanest homes---dust, dust mites, mold and mildew spores, and dander from pets.

Where Symptoms Occur---If your symptoms are location specific, it is an indication of an allergic reaction to some substance. Keeping track of where you are when you start to feel bad will allow you to more accurately pinpoint the irritant.

Duration of Symptoms-----Generally, the common cold and even the flu run their course in seven to ten days. The runny nose, congestion, coughing, and sneezing go away, and you feel well again. Fever, aches and pains are often a part of the experience.

With allergies there is rarely a fever, aches or pains unless a secondary infection such as sinusitis occurs. Runny nose, watering eyes, sneezing, coughing, congestion, and post nasal drip tend to be ongoing with increases and decreases of intensity. And they may lasts for weeks rather than days. Symptoms that are chronic often indicate continued exposure to allergens-a substance your body perceives as a threat.

Why Allergies Happen---No one knows for sure why some people have them and other don't. Sometimes it's genetic and the condition surfaces very early on in life. In others the onset happens later in adulthood. And then there are cases of people in the same family who have grown up in the same house-----one suffers from allergies and the other does not.

The good news is that research has shown that being aware of the problem and what causes it is an important first step towards managing this condition. By knowing what the triggers are, avoiding the outdoor pollutants and reducing those indoors, allergy sufferers can maintain a very high quality of life.
